streaming disk space

How much disk space will I require for my streaming files?

Disk space requirements for streaming files will depend on two factors.

a) The type of file that you are using (RealVideo, Windows Media, QuickTime)
b) The bit rate which the files are encoded at.

The table below shows how much disk space is required for a five minute clip in different formats and different bit rates.

  Windows Media Real Video QuickTime
Modem (56kbps) 2mb 4mb 3mb
ISDN (64kbps) 4.5mb 9mb 6mb
ADSL/DSL 11.5mb 22mb 15mb

MP3s can also be encoded at different rates depending on quality.

In order that people with modems can stream without buffering, we recommend encoding at 56kbps.
For higher quality streams, where users are likely to have broadband connections 128kbps can be used.

A five minute mp3 encoded at 56kbps will take up about 2mb of disk space. A 128kbps stream will take up about 4.5mb
